When Anxiety Keeps You Awake: Trusting God With What You Cannot Control

Heart Inventory: A Daily Devotion & Reflection
What is the thing that's been keeping you awake at night lately?
For some, it's finances. For others, it's business, family, health, relationships, or a difficult decision that seems impossible to make. Whatever it is, most of us are carrying something heavy—and often we've carried it for so long that we've forgotten just how heavy it has become.
In this episode, we reflect on Jesus' words in Matthew 6:25-26, where He tells us not to worry about our lives and points us to the birds of the air as an example of God's faithful care.
This isn't a message of condemnation. Jesus isn't scolding us for feeling anxious. Rather, He speaks to us with the heart of a loving Father, reminding us that we were never meant to carry every burden on our own.
The Exhaustion of Carrying What Was Never Ours
Anxiety convinces us that everything depends on us.
It tells us that if we don't solve the problem, fix the situation, control every detail, plan every outcome, and prepare for every possibility, everything will fall apart.
No wonder so many of us are exhausted.
Sometimes we're not tired because life is difficult.
We're tired because we're carrying burdens God never asked us to carry.
Jesus' invitation is not to ignore our responsibilities. Rather, it is to release the illusion that we are in control of everything.
There is a difference between being responsible and trying to be God.
But peace begins when we shift our focus from what is beyond our control to the God who remains in control.
Lessons From the Birds
One of the most beautiful parts of this passage is what Jesus points to next.
He says: "Look at the bird of the air, they do not sow, they do not harvest, and do not store food in barns; and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not more worthy than they are?"
If God faithfully cares for the birds, how much more will He care for His children?
As business owners, parents, leaders, and ordinary people navigating daily responsibilities, it's easy to become overwhelmed by deadlines, finances, family concerns, future plans, and countless responsibilities. Yet God's invitation remains the same: trust Him with today.
You don't need grace for next year.
You don't need strength for every possible outcome.
You only need enough grace for today.
As Catholics, we have the beautiful gift of bringing our anxieties directly to Jesus—in prayer, in Adoration, in Confession, and most especially in the Eucharist. Every Mass is an opportunity to place our burdens at His feet and declare: "Lord, I trust You more than I trust my fears."
If you're feeling overwhelmed today, remember:
The same God who feeds the birds.
The same God who clothes the flowers.
The same God who created the stars.
Is the same God watching over you.
You are not forgotten.
You are not abandoned.
You are not carrying this alone.
Trust Him with the next step. Trust Him with today.
